From its inception, Urmi endeavours to:
  • Create a community of women and engage them in purposeful activities to help them become self-sufficient
  • Bridge disparities and discrimination on the basis of caste, creed and religion
  • Promote healthy interactions and meaningful discussions

In the humble beginnings of 1953, Urmi started its journey with an aim to empower the women of Atul and the nearby villages. These cherished ladies were introduced to the art of knitting and tailoring, weaving threads of empowerment and creativity. Community gatherings were organised, amidst the warmth of these gatherings, these talented women showcased their handcrafted wonders – from snug apparel to cozy sweaters, each stitch a testament to their skill and dedication.

In 1968, Urmi embarked on a new chapter, venturing into the world of spices. Beginning with the traditional hand-pounded spices, and later embracing iron-pounding machines in 1970 to meet the growing demand, Urmi remains committed to preserving the time-honoured traditions of spice preparation.

Our spices are lovingly nurtured through the traditional method, ensuring that each grain retains its precious flavour and aroma. With meticulous care, our team of women tend to every step of the our process – from cleaning and sun-drying to pounding and packaging – transforming simple ingredients into delicious treasures that grace kitchens with their authentic flavours and aroma.
