Our story

Since the creation of Urmi in 1953, women empowerment has been an intrinsic part of our story. Hand-made spices prepared by women from villages around Atul (Gujarat, India), were introduced in the 1970s and have evolved as the identity of the organisation. From sun drying to iron pounding, blending and packaging - every step of the process is undertaken with love and care by our 'all women' team. Our spices embody the essence of tradition - meticulously handcrafted with a touch of warmth and enriched with a flavour that carries the stories of generations.

Balwantrai Mazumdar, one of the founding fathers of Atul, set up Urmi to empower women

In this early years, activities such as knitting, music competitions and flood relief were conducted

The constitution of Urmi was adopted

Hand-pounded spices were introduced to generate livelihood opportunities for women from villages around Atul.

Pounding machines were procured to meet the growing demand for traditionally prepared spices.

Spice blends prepared with 100% homemade recipes were introduced

Urmi Dukān, the first retail store of Urmi, was set up at Atul
